By Luciano Migliaccio
Though at the time the painting Portrait of Louis XVI entered the Masp Collection it was attributed to Drouais, it was later identified as a copy of an official portrait of Louis XVI of France (1754-1793) commissioned from painter Antoine-François Callet, in the 18th century, by Comte de Vergennes, French minister of Foreign Affairs, for distribution to French embassies abroad. The original can be seen at the Musée de Clermont-Ferrand.
