The projections are displayed on screens using various  supports—some exhibited on walls, while others rest on concrete cubes, referencing the crystal easels designed by Bo Bardi for MASP. This structure embodies her vision of an open and transparent museum, allowing visitors a closer engagement with artworks. The original soundtrack, composed by Maria de Alvear, enhances the installation’s immersive and sensory experience.

“For Lina Bo Bardi, a museum should not be a dusty repository of historical remnants. Exhibited objects only have meaning when they are accessible to the public, without hierarchies, and in dialogue with contemporary life. Reflecting on these ideals, Isaac Julien successfully conveys the relevance of Bo Bardi’s ideas, whose collective vision continues to shape spaces that foster interaction between art, architecture and society,” says Matheus de Andrade.

A Marvellous Entanglement was first exhibited at Victoria Miro Gallery  in London in 2019. Now, it premieres in Brazil as part of Five essays on MASP – a series of exhibitions inaugurating the Pietro Maria Bardi Building, occupying five floors and reflecting on the museum’s history and collection.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in 1960, Isaac Julien lives and works between London and Santa Cruz, California. He has been making films and film installations for over 40 years and his work has been exhibited at institutions such as MoMA, Tate Britain, the Royal Academy and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He has had retrospectives and solo exhibitions at museums such as MAC Niterói, MAXXI and the Centre Pompidou. In 2022 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, and in 2023 he was ranked fifth on ArtReview's Power 100 list. Since 2019, he has been a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he founded the Isaac Julien Lab, which focuses on audiovisual research and production.

ACCESSIBILITY

All temporary exhibitions at MASP are accessible, with free admission for people with disabilities and their companions. Visits are offered in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) or with descriptive texts and subtitles in large print and audio-visual productions in easy language – with narration, subtitles and interpretation in Libras, describing and commenting on the spaces and works. The content, available on the museum’s website and YouTube channel, can be used by people with disabilities, students, teachers, non-literate people and the public.
