Hélio Oiticica (1937–1980) is one of the most radical artists of the 20th century. His acutely conceptual and rigorous oeuvre, with profound origins in the language of European constructivism, is also starkly vital, sensual, sensorial, committed to experience, participation, and the body. The Parangolé is one of his most revolutionary works, a fluid garment made of fabric, plastic or paper to be worn, experienced, lived and danced by the spectator/participant. Hélio Oiticica: Dance in My Experience departs from this key work, tracing its genealogy in the artist’s career, identifying rhythmic, choreographic and dancerly elements throughout his trajectory—from his first Metaesquemas, through the Spatial Reliefs, Nuclei and Bólides, culminating in the Parangolés. Lavishly illustrated, this is the most comprehensive publication on the artist to date and accompanies a major exhibition organized by the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) in partnership with the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro.
