Paul Gauguin: The Other and I is the first exhibition to investigate Gauguin’s relationship to the idea of alterity and the exoticization of the “other.” Focusing on his self-portraits and the works he produced in Tahiti, this catalogue addresses in a critical tone the inherent tensions between his biography and the image he created for himself, and considers the questions that arise at the center of contemporary debates about Gauguin’s oeuvre. Investigating the artist’s trajectory through issues as the “primitivism,” the “exotic,” the “tropics,” and cultural appropriation, besides the erotization of the female body, sexuality, and androgyny, this volume sheds new light on the ways in which Gauguin’s oeuvre reinforced the production of an imaginary about the “other,” and builds a framework for an evaluation of its legacy today.
