Created by Dalí, the dress was made by Russian fashion couturier Karinski. In 1949 Dalí created the decorados (background screens) and the wardrobe for the ballet El Sombrero de Tres Picos, by Manuel de Falla (Descharnes & Neret 1994, II, n. 941, 943). It is possible that the dress, although originated in connection with an initiative of the Dior Collection, might somehow be an extension of the series created for Falla’s masterpiece. Notwithstanding the differences between the costume on display at Masp and the ones designed for the 1949 ballet, it is nevertheless noteworthy that the years 1949-1950 are the only years when Dalí devotes himself to costume design. Furthermore, the blue of one of the ballet’s costumes is identical in tone to that of Masp Costume of the Year 2045.
