One of the last in the series The Weavers’ Revolt, the Counsel etching shows unparalleled mastery in its various uses of shading. In a certain sense, the ability to create atmospheres saturated with emotion, the intimate relationship with black, and the ability to make it fill whole dimensions in space that are only perceptible after having spent a certain time in observation, make Kollwitz a direct heir to Rembrandt. Kollwitz, Hauptmann’s twin soul, in her intense portrayal of the story of the class struggle and the acute feelings of existential precariousness, is perhaps unmatched in the history of art.
