TEXTS

Albino Braz is the author of 42 works in the collection of drawings donated to MASP by Dr. Osório César (1895–1979), a psychiatrist at the Hospital Psiquiátrico do Juquery, founded in 1898 in Franco da Rocha. At MASP this set was originally called the “collection of art by the alienated.” In 2015, this name was revised and the collection was shown in its entirety, for the first time, on the exhibition Histórias da loucura: desenhos do Juquery [Histories of Madness: Drawings from Juquery]. Since then, it has been classified on Brazilian Art, thus considering its artistic dimension. Braz lived in Jaboticabal and was interned at Juquery in 1934, where he lived until his death. His works were presented in exhibitions such as Art Brut (1949), organized by artist Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985), in Paris, and at the 16th Bienal de São Paulo (l98l). In his untitled work referred to as Homem vestido com retrato na parede, the color of the clothing and the delicateness of the man’s pose are repeated in the vases, in the little birds and in the flower that he is holding in his raised fingers. On the wall, the circle with a purple frame shows a female bust portrait. This circular frame, which resembles that of a mirror, also appears in other drawings by the artist and seems to suggest that the figure is actually the reflection of the person viewing the work.
