More than revealing the artist’s interest in the revival of the dark Dutch interiors, in the style of Ostade and others, that had moved many 19th century French painters, this work can be situated precisely within the turn-of-the-century vogue of portraying archaic interiors of the houses of Brittany. This beautiful interior of Rosalvo’s is, for example, quite similar to Intérieur Breton by Germain David-Nillet (1861-1932), conserved at the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris (Inv. 302).
