As per the inscription, Landscape with Canoe at the Water´s Edge, is a seascape painted in Rocio, in the port town of Paranaguá where the painter settled when he came to Brazil. The exceptional compositive wisdom of the work is shown in the slowly expansive respiration of the color and the pure events of direction, pointers that pace the surface of the canvas and unsettle the simple geometry of the horizon. Of a modernism unequaled in the Brazil of that time (the work dates from 1922), it can in itself be considered as important a landmark for the emergence of modern art in the country as the Week of Modern Art of 1922.
