A letter from Carol Forman Tabler to P. M. Bardi, dated July 1985 and conserved in the Masp Archives, informs that the painting Still Life with a Monkey and a Guitar (Art and Gluttony) exhibited at the 1864 Paris Salon with the title Art et Gourmandise was the first work Vollon showed in an official exhibition after participating in the Salon des Refusés, in 1863. In 1927 the picture was included in the private collection of U. S. connoisseur Chester Dale, who later donated it to Masp.
