TEXTS

Virgin on the Throne (Fragment): Christ the holy child was clearly in the lap of the Virgin. The drapery of brass with abundant folds not found in the typology of the Roman Virgins, also points to a considerably later dating from a stylistic point of view. The use of two materials is usually seen in the combination of two types of wood, such as in the Virgin on the Throne, dated 1160-1170, from Marsdorf, near Frechen, now in the Monastery of Marienborn, in Zülpich-Hoven. According to the museum’s documentation, other madonnas of this type are to be found among the treasures of the cathedrals of Salamanca, Toledo, and Astenga.
